About Me
Keeping Employees Productive

Last year, I realized that a few of our employees did not have the best intentions when they came to work. It seemed like their goal was to slack off and avoid work, and it was really frustrating. I realized that I had to do something in order to make things right, so I started working with them to train them. I also installed a camera system and explained the consequences of their actions. Within about six months, we were able to completely overhaul things, and it made a huge difference. This blog is all about keeping employees productive and on track, so that you can keep your company viable.

Reducing Pipe Weld Stress

Grace Hanson

It is often the case that pipes will need to undergo welding. Whether this is due to the need to join different sections of piping or to repair damages that may have occurred, there are some important factors to consider about having your business's pipes welded.

How Does Welding Cause Stress To The Pipe?

It is an unfortunate reality that welding work can add a substantial amount of stress to the pipes that are undergoing it. This is partially due to the tendency of the metal filler that is applied during the welding process to pull on the two pieces of metal that it is joining. The force of this stress is due to the tendency of the metal fill to expand as it becomes hotter. Conversely, the filler will want to contract as it cools, and this can be a source of intense stress on the pipe.

Is It Possible To Mitigate The Stress The Welding Process Creates?

Luckily, it is possible to greatly reduce the amount of stress that is generated by the welding process. For example, one of the most effective types of welding stress relief can be using heat treatments. This approach will involve reheating the welded section of the pipe to just below its original welding temperature. Once this temperature is reached, the section of the pipe will be held at this temperature for an extended period of time. This can allow the pressure that is on the metal filler to become more evenly distributed over the entire welded section of the pipe. This process may need to be repeated several times in order to fully mitigate the stresses that were created, but it can be among the most durable options for preventing damaging stresses.

Will Pipe Weld Stress Relief Work Weaken The Pipe?

Due to the fact that stress relief for the pipes will likely involve heating the pipe for a prolonged period of time, it can be easy to assume that this will result in damage occurring to the pipe. In reality, this heat will generally only be applied to the area that directly underwent the welding work. This can prevent this treatment by adding more stress to other areas of the pipe. In fact, welding work that does not undergo this type of relief treatment will be far more likely to suffer significant failures in the future. Not surprisingly, these issues can be more difficult and costly to repair as the damage may require the section of pipe to be completely replaced.
